Hypocrisy is admittedly a complicated subject but sometimes reducing a topic to a simple illustration can be useful.

Let us do that with this topic using a little phrase for the Lord’s (or ‘Model’) Prayer…. “Thy Will be done.” Now, it is obvious what the one praying is asking for, or is it?

One might suspect that he is desiring that God’s Sovereign Will be done, but that is going to be done anyway, right? Regardless of what anyone prays or does not pray, the Secret and Sovereign Will of God will surely be accomplished. He said as much.

Eph 1:11

11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: KJV

So, the praying one is obviously (at least to this writer) asking that God’s Revealed Will be done, the commands, ordinances and instructions of God’s Word that specifically apply to him (or her). He is literally praying and committing to full conformity in his life to everything God has given him by way of written instruction.

Any mind that is in any way properly functioning will realize that he is committing to a total upheaval, reformation and re-ordering of all of his priorities.

The honest soul will bend to this principle and affirm to God his purpose to be obedient in all things, no matter the cost. He will also recognize his complete deficiency of ability and cry out to God as David often did when making such commitments (re: Psalm 119), “quicken me.”

But every soul will be tempted (and most will decide) to re-order his understanding (interpretation?) of “Thy Will” to a format with which he is more comfortable and avoid the intense commitment that the simple statement, “Thy Will be done,” inherently intends and demands.

He has become a Hypocrite!
